The Good Person Test

Once you have learned the basic training outline each presenter is encouraged to develop their own personal style.

By including testimonies, stories and illustrations to communicate the Gospel, it is possible to make it more relevant to the person you are sharing with.

Kevin Piper

When someone approaches me to do the Good Person Test, I use the first page as my friendship evangelism page.

It only takes about three minutes for someone to like you enough to allow you to connect with them.

The following is just one example of how I share the Gospel with someone who approaches me.

It is very important to be led by the Holy Spirit and flexible in your presentation.

The idea is to get the people you are sharing with to compare what they think makes a good person to what the Bible says a good person is according to the 10 commandments, which prepares their heart so that they can receive the good news of the Gospel. Then give them the 'Good News'.

'The Good Person Test' - Cover Page
Good Person Test

Q. Would you consider yourself to be a good person?  Wait for their answer. Remember there is no right and wrong answer, its just their opinion.

Tell them: The Oxford Dictionary says a good person is 'someone that is morally excellent in thought, word and deed'. (Thats what you think, what you say and what you do, in every situation').

Q. Based on this definition, are all these people good?

You could use one or two of the following cinereous to explain their need of some sort of standard to measure their goodness, or make up your own…

Remember, we are only commenting on what many people believe to be true, to demonstrate that according to the Bible there is no such thing as a good person, not even one (Rom 3: 19-20). Nobody is good enough to get into heaven by their own goodness, not even mother Teresa.

Understanding God's character will help. God is...

If we leave any one of these characteristics out, then we create another god to suit ourselves, which is idolatry, and violates the 2nd commandment.

God is holy & His standard is so high we will all fail on judgment day. Everyone in this world is born a sinner and therefore sins and needs to repent before a Holy God and put their faith (trust) in what Jesus Christ did for us when He died & shed His blood on a cruel Roman cross in our place, to satisfy God's justice, thereby giving us eternal life.

The moment anyone does this God forgives them of their sin & grants them eternal life & they are born again. Not because of their own goodness but because of Gods sacrifice on the cross for them & their faith in that alone to save them.

Q. What do you consider makes a person good?

Q. Do you think all these people are good?

State: None of these people think they are bad. At least they think there are plenty of people worse than themselves. They saw themselves good in their own eyes because they measured what was good by their OWN standard of goodness.

If we all have our own standard of goodness, then we could all claim to be good.True?

None of these people have done anything bad because they thought they were an evil person.

Adolph Hitler considered himself a good person when he murdered over 6 million Jews, five million etnic minorities and 30 million Russians. In his mind he was not an evil man, but a good man, doing the world a favor, because the Jews crucified Jesus Christ and should be eliminated. And millions of Germans agreed with his standard of goodness and voted him into power. He never broke a German law.

Saddam Husain considered himself to be a good person by killing 400 Kurd's a week on behalf of his people.

Osama Bin laden considers himself to be a good person by sending his followers out to be suicide bombers and killing everyone that doesn’t convert to his religion, to please his god.

George Bush considered himself to be a good person by invading Iraq to protect the world from a cruel tyrant & the oil fields for the world economy etc...

State: So how do we know if we really are a good person if we all have different standards that just make us look good in our own minds?

The following are some example questions you could ask to get them thinking.

Q. How do you know if your standard is good enough to get you into Heaven? (If there was a Heaven)

Q. How do you know if you really are a good person? Would you agree that if we want to know if something is right or wrong, we need some kind of standard to measure it? ( You need to get them to agree).

Q. What standard can we use to measure how ‘good’ we really are? ( Wait for an answer)

Q. Did you know that our moral laws are based on the 10 Commandments? Have you heard of them before? ( Wait for an answer).

Q. Do you think they are a good standard? Can you name any of them?

State. Lets see if you can answer 4 easy questions based on the 10 Commandments to see if you are good enough to get into Heaven?

Turn quickly to the next page without giving them to much time to think about what you've just said.

Question One - Do Not Lie
Liar

Ask them what they see in this picture  that violates one of the 10 Commandments?  They should be able to see a face and the word Liar in hand writing.

Most get the face but you may have to point out the word 'Liar' - then ask...

One of the Commandments says we should not lie.

Q.  Have you  ever  told a lie? Even a white lie or exaggerated truth? -  Wait for them to answer  Yes

Q.  What do you call someone that tells lies?  -  A Liar

Q.  So what does that make you? -  Wait for them to answer -  A Liar .  If they struggle to confess that they are a liar, ask them...  'How many lies do you have to tell to be called a liar?'  Wait for them to answer -  One.  Try to get them to see i t only takes one lie to be called a liar. Then ask them question 4 again.

Always agree with them that you have had the same problem.

Once you get them to confess, go to the next page.

Question Two - Do Not Steal
Thief

Ask them w  hat they think this person is up to that violates one of the 10 Commandments?

You  may have to point out he's stealing a car - then ask...

One of the Commandments says we should not steal.

Q.  What do you call someone that has stolen something?  Wait for them to answer -  A thief

Q.  Regardless of the value, whether it’s a piece of fruit to robbing a bank, or something in between... Have you ever stolen anything in your lifetime?  Wait for them to answer  YES ... (you may have to give them some ideas)

Q.  So what does that make  you  ?  -  Wait for them to answer -  A Thief.  If they struggle to confess that they are a Thief, ask them...

'How many things do you have to steal to be called a thief?'  -  Wait for them to answer -  One.

A.  That’s right; y you only have to steal one thing to be called a thief.  Then ask them again…  Q. So what does that make  you  then  ?

If they still struggle to answer  suggest...

Q.  'If I stole your wallet or purse, what would you call me'  -  A thief  .

A.  That's right, but I’ve only stolen one thing to be called a thief. So what does that make  you then ?  Wait for them to answer -  A thief  .

Suggest that they 'Listen to the voice of their conscience'

NB: It can help if you agree with them that you have had the same problem.  Once you get them to confess, go to the next page.

Try to make it fun

Question 3 - Do Not Blaspheme
Angry

Ask them w  hat they think this person is up to that violates one of the 10 Commandments?

You may have to point out he may be experiencing a bit of road rage or something and is using Gods name as a swear word or cuss word to express his disgust.

Q.  Have you ever done that? - Yes

Q.  Do you know what that’s called? (They probably won’t)

State:  This is called blaspheme... One of the commandments says we should not take God's name in vain... for the Lord your God will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain... (Deuteronomy 5:11)

Blasphemy is a very serious sin against the God who gave you life. He gave you eyes to see His creation, a tongue to taste the good food He created, ears to hear and a heart to love the people He created, and everything that is dear to you. And you have lowered His holy name and used it as a filth word to express disgust.

The bible teaches that using Gods name as a curse word is very serious in Gods eyes and is punishable by death. (1Kings 21v 10-13)

Q.  So what does that make you? -  Wait for them to answer (help them if need be)…

A Blasphemer  .

NB: It can help if you agree with them that you have had the same problem.  Once you get them to confess, go to the next page.

Question Four - Do Not Commit Adultery
Adultery

Give them a scenario like...

Q.  What do you think this person is doing that violates one of the 10 commandments.

You may have to give them a scenario like....

If I was to tell you that both of these people are married, but  not to each other . What is that called?  -  Adultery.

Q.  Have you ever done that? -  Wait for them to give you an answer

Jesus said in  Matt 5:27  "You have heard that it was said,  'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY';

28  but I say to you that everyone who looks at another person with lust for them has already committed adultery with that person in their heart.

Q.  Have you ever done that?- Wait for them to give you an answer - YES

Q.  So what does that make you?  - Wait for them to answer An Adulterer at heart.

NB: It can help if you agree with them that you have had the same problem.

Once you get them to confess, go to the next page.

Summarise

After the presentation of the Commandments

God is Holy and righteous and His standards are so high that He judges murderers to be the same as thieves or liars etc...

For this, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not kill , You shall not steal , You shall not bear false witness  , You shall not covet  ; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, You shall love your neighbour as yourself.

1 Cor 6:9-10

...do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicator's, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.

The Courtroom
Courtroom

Have you kept the commandments?

Q.  From what you've told me you're a lying, thieving, blasphemous, adulterer in deed or at heart. (Whichever they have admitted too)

Q. If you were to die tonight,  and if there was a God who was to judge you according to the standard of the 10 Commandments, and you stood before Him in His courtroom. Do you think He would find you innocent or guilty?

NB: Remember, we only have to have broken one of the 10 commandments to be found guilty.

For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it . -  James 2:10

The First of the Ten Commandments

It has been established that you would be  guilty  of breaking His commandments. Even if you were able to perfectly keep nine of the commandments for your entire life -- you  have  broken the first commandment.

The First of the Ten Commandments is "You shall have no other gods before me." That means that we should love God with all of our heart, mind, soul and strength. The Bible tells us that  no one  has kept this commandment (see Psalm 14:2-3).

Please don't be discouraged. I urge you to be patient and to continue on. Our straightforwardness is motivated by a genuine concern for your soul.

While it may seem that God's goodness will cause Him to overlook your sins, the opposite is actually true. Perhaps the following illustration will add some clarity:

Imagine you're standing before a judge, guilty of multiple crimes. The judge is about to pass sentence when he asks, "Do you have anything to say for yourself?" You stand up, look the judge in the eye and say, "Yes Your Honor, I believe that you're a good man... and because you're good, you will let me go."

The judge will probably say something like, "Well, you're right about one thing... I am a good man. And it's because I'm good that I'm going to see that you are punished for your crimes."

The very thing you are counting on to save you on the Day of Judgment -- namely God's goodness -- is going to be the very thing that will see to it that justice is done.

Because God is  so good  He will make sure that every murderer, rapist, and thief receives justice... but He won't stop there.

He will also make sure every liar, blasphemer, and adulterer is punished. While this is something that is extremely tragic and far from God's ultimate desire for any person, the Bible is clear that the place of punishment for those who do not turn from their sins is Hell.

Wait for a plea of GUILTY!

Before showing them the next page...

Heaven or Hell?
Judgment

After an admission of Guilt...

Q.  If God finds you guilty - where do you think He will send you? -  Heaven or hell?

1. Now ask these questions before moving on...

Q. If the Bible is true and you died today. Does it concern you that you may be headed for Hell?

If this doesn't concern them it’s probably because they have not been convicted of their sin and it will be much harder as you continuing. Or they may just think they will go to heaven anyway. Please pray and persist. Go to N0: 2

However if they admit they are destined for Hell, then their heart has been prepared, and you can go on to proclaim the Gospel...

Before turning the page ask...

Q. Do you know what God did so YOU don't have to go to Hell?

At this point in your presentation it is vitally important that you show that you really do care about them and what could happen to them.

Please remember their Eternal Destination is at stake!

Turn to the next page

2. NB: If they have answered Heaven, or it doesn't concern them, remind them...

State.  I've got some bad news for you. From what you've told me you may not end up where you want to.

The bible declares that WE ARE ALL under sin...as it is written,  THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS,  NOT EVEN ONE ; THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS, THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS FOR GOD; ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER THEY HAVE BECOME USELESS; THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD,  THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE . Rom 3: 9-12

How We Became Sinners

The Bible teaches that God created us so that we can spend eternity in fellowship with Him. But when our ancestor Adam disobeyed God, (spiritual) death which is the power of sin, entered into his body causing his soul to become impure and separated him from God.

Since then, all mankind have inherited this impure condition of the soul. The soul is that eternal part of us that lives on when we die physically.

If we die in this impure condition we will not be allowed access into heaven where nothing that is impure can enter, but we will be sent to a place of impurity and eternal torment - That place is called Hell!

We will not go to Hell because of the wrong that we have done, but because we have inherited an impure soul... It is THIS  that separates US from God!

Our wrong doings (which are caused by this inherited sinful soul) such as lying, cheating, stealing, hatred, adultery, murder, etc  prove that we have sin working in us.  It is Gods 10 commandments that reveal man’s sinful condition and need of a savior.

This death is not just physical death but also a spiritual death, which separates us from God forever’

“And as it is appointed for men once to die (physical death), but after this the judgment” (spiritual death) - Hebrews 9:27

The Law reveals we are born a sinner and guilty before a Holy God

The law, (the 10 commandments) is like God’s mirror which He uses to reveal to us that our sins are caused by the power of sin working in us.

We do not go to Hell for the wrongs (sins) we have done but because of the inherited sin in our soul (our sin nature). Our wrong doings (sins) like lying, cheating, stealing, hatred, murder, greed, lust, etc are the results of the power of sin working in us.

The bible says “For All have sinned (broken God’s commandments) and fall short of the glory of God” (God’s standard) Romans 3:23. “...that the whole world may become guilty before God... for by the law is the knowledge of sin(s)” Romans 3:19-20

Now ask these two questions again before moving on...

Q.  If the bible is true and you died today.  Does it concern you that you may be headed for Hell ?

You should be able to get them to at least admit that if it's true they would be concerned. Their heart should be prepared enough for you to proclaim the Gospel...

Before turning the page ask...

Q.  Do you know what God did so YOU don't have to go to Hell?

At this point in your presentation it is vitally important that you show that you really do care about them and what could happen to them.

Please remember their Eternal Destination is at stake!

Proclaim the Gospel
Gospel Message

You've Broken God's Law... Jesus Took Your Punishment!

So that Gods Justice can be satisfied, and you can be forgiven!

Important Note: Don't leave this page open to the public as you continue. Just give them a glimpse for a few seconds, then flip it back to the Courtroom page or Front cover page you talk.

The reason is that Passers by have no idea what you are doing and this keeps what you are doing covert. If people think its religious they won't give it a go. However if they have no idea but walk past sometimes several times, their curiosity often gets the better of them and they come and ask what its all about.

It can add impact if you open this page and give them a glimpse several times as you share.

The following is where you can get creative. It is important to be led by the Holy Spirit and listen to Him for words of knowledge and wisdom.

The Gospel

God loves us so much that He does not want any of us to be separated from Him and perish forever in Hell. 2 Peter 3:9, John 3:16. But someone has to pay the fine for our sin to satisfy Gods justice.

Hell is Gods prison without parole, for guilty criminals.

Substitution: (to take the place of another)

God has provided a way to bring us back into relationship with Him by sending His Son Jesus Christ to become like one of us, yet without sin, to suffer and die on the cross as a sacrifice for us, to shed His blood for the forgiveness of ALL our sins and for the healing of ALL our sicknesses and curses. He then descended into Hell on our behalf so we don’t have to go there. Matthew 8:16-17, Galatians 3:13. Hebrews 10:12. Hebrews 9: 22. 1 Peter 1:18-19. Isaiah 53: 3-11.

SINFUL MAN

Sin and its results (sins) are why God sent His Son to die as a substitute for you and me, to pay the price for our sin with his blood, to fulfil the scriptures. Hebrews 9:22, Hebrews 10:12

What Must I Do to be Saved? (RECEIVE ETERNAL LIFE)

Two Steps to Salvation.

1. Repentance: (Have a change of direction in heart and mind towards sin)

God gives us the ability to repent when we see and believe what Jesus has done for us... ‘Repent then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out. Acts 3:19. Acts 11:18

2. Believe (Trust or Faith)

“...what must I do to be saved?” “BELIEVE on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved.” (Receive eternal life) Acts 16:30-31

Jesus said... “Truly, truly, unless one is born again he cannot enter the Kingdom of God.” John 3:3 - “Yet all who received Him, to those who believed in His name He gave the right to become children of God,” John 1:12

If you believe this is true, all you need to do now is tell God... and it's done! Romans 10:9-13 (New American Standard Bible)

9that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. 11For the Scripture says, "WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED." 12For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him; 13for "WHOEVER WILL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED."

That is God's Promise to you!

When you have completed your presentation

The Ultimate Question to ask is?

Now that you understand the two things that you have to do to get right with God today...

When are you going to do it?

If you believe the gospel message then this is the next step for you to take...

Step 1 - Your confession to God...

Repent: Lord Jesus I confess I have sinned and broken your commandments. I am a sinner and I don't want to stay separated from God in Hell for all eternity. Please forgive me. I am willing to turn away from all that I know is wrong and...

Step 2 - Turn to God and Believe in your heart...

Believe/Faith/Trust: I turn to You Lord Jesus and believe in my heart and put my trust in what You did when You took the punishment that was due to come on me. I believe You shed Your blood on the cross for the forgiveness of ALL my sins and for my healing, and then rose again on the third day c conquering death so that I can receive the free gift of everlasting life and have an eternal relationship with God the Father.

“Congratulations... If you have done this with a genuine heart then you have now become a child of God, which means you are now ‘Born Again’ and have become a ”New Creation in Christ” - having passed from eternal death into eternal life. God has now become your Heavenly Father, with whom you can now fellowship with.”

Please remember this is not a formular. You cannot be born again just by saying a prayer. This new birth is a work of grace between you and God. It can only be experienced as you genuinley believe the  message of the gospel in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord.

God can now renew your mind to the truth of His word and transform your life to become like Jesus.

  1. Romans 12:2
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
Romans 12:1-3 (in Context) Romans 12 (Whole Chapter)
  2. Ephesians 4:23
and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind,
Ephesians 4:22-24 (in Context) Ephesians 4 (Whole Chapter)

Why Do Christians Still Sin?

NB: This information is not something you need to talk to your hearer about, but is for your understanding of what has taken place in you and them once they have repented of their sin and trusted God for their salvation.

All those who have experienced this new birth have been removed from their old corrupted soul and placed into a new incorruptible soul. However, the death that entered Adam corrupting his body and his soul has now been condemned to our body (Rom 8:7) awaiting physical death before being raised at the resurrection without sin and immortal. We are no longer in our sin but sin dwells in our flesh.

The Battle of the Two Natures

All believers experience the flesh waging war against the new nature they now have in Christ.

That death which remains in our flesh has a mind and lusts of its own and is what every believer must to learn to overcome. Read Romans 7: 14-25.

Paul makes this clear twice in the same passage. In verse 17 he states... 'So now, no longer am I the one doing it (sins), but sin which dwells in me'... and in verse 20 he states... 'But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me'.

The only way a believer can get the victory in this battle is to continue to make Jesus Lord of their life and ask Him to open their mind to understand the scriptures.

In verse 24 & 25 Paul state... 'Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin.

The key to every believers victory is to remember you are a new creation in Christ, the old has past & the new has come. The flesh can only exercise its power on the basis of lies and deception, and the only way to walk in victory is to know who and what you are in Christ Jesus our Lord. Read more...

A GUIDE to Your Next Steps in Your New Found Faith...

  1. Share your experience with others.
  2. Read your bible daily and let God speak to you through his word
  3. Talk to God in prayer every day.
  4. Get baptized in water as soon as possible.
  5. Find a good Christian Bible-believing fellowship where you will be able to grow in your new found faith.

Water Baptism Overview

Why Water Baptism?

The true meaning and power behind water baptism when properly conceived and practiced; is the believer's initial confession of faith before men, demons, angels, and God.

Baptism is a visible sign that depicts our separation from the world (Acts 2:38-40, 1Corinthians 10:1-2), our death with Christ, the burial of our old man, (Romans 6:3-5, Colossians 2:11-12) the death of the old creation (soul), (1Peter 3:20-21) and the washing of the Word of God. (Acts 22:16, Ephesians 5:26).

Water baptism is the New Testament form of conversion-initiation. It is God's idea and His testimony.

Water Baptism is a commandment. It is an outward action of obedience to the commandment - Matthew 28:10

The word Baptism means to be fully emerged.

We are to baptize in the name of the Father, Son (i.e. in Jesus name) and Holy Spirit - Matthew 28:10 - Acts 19:15

Baptism is a 'figure' i.e. a representation of a 'saving' from death - Baptism "saves us" in the sense of having a good conscience towards God - 1 Peter 3:21

Our conscience is made clear or good in the obedience to the commandment of baptism. It is because we have been justified by the resurrection of Christ - Romans. 4:25, that we have a good or clear conscience as to our past. Hebrews 9:14 - Hebrews 10:2

Other Thoughts on Water Baptism

Baptism is an outward identification of what has already happened internally (spiritually) to us, and displays (witnesses) outwardly a burial into a death to sin and a resurrection to life - Romans. 6: 2-4

This great act of God through Christ gives us the ability to walk in newness of life. It also speaks (displays) the Hope of the bodily resurrection to come - Romans. 6:5

When we believe on Christ a spiritual crucifixion takes place of our old man which leads to its death - Romans. 6:6 - Galations 2:20.
This old man is buried by a 'spiritual unseen baptism' into death. A releasing of bondage - Romans. 6:3-5,7. Then a 'spiritual raising' of the new man takes place - Romans 6:9-11
